When the Wu-Tang emerged from the Island of Staten aka Shaolin in 1992 and ’93, one of the most scientifically gifted ‘streetologists’ and criminologists to merge futuristic thought with rhyme was introduced to the globe. Part of maybe the most lethal group of more than three MCs in any one crew, Raekwon’s true gifts would lie in wait a couple years after his untouchable clan dropped Enter The 36 Chambers. As an epic, organic and time capsule of a release, in Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Raekwon’s definitive masterwork changed Hip-Hop’s mid-90s sonic texture (with Ghostface riding shotgun of course). Raekwon’s career has advanced straight ahead with waves of critical fans seeking to recapture the past glory of Cuban Linx, and Rae has never gone back but with one of his recent releases, F.I.L.A. (Fly International Luxurious Art) – he may have recaptured a moment in the times of the 2010s.
At the same time as The Wu came out slicin’ and dicin’ MCs, another solo assassin on the microphone was emerging from one of the more obscure geographic locations in the landscape of Hip-Hop – Indiana. Home of the Hoosiers, Circle City and even former capital of the Ku Klux Klan, Supernatural didn’t care where who was from or what they thought they represented – and he likely still shrugs his shoulders about any details other the skills. Supernatural is one of the truly legendary freestyle (not written) battle MCs and wordsmiths. A legendary freestyle among many introduced him to the world while on air in August 1993 with The Baker Boyz, on a show when Tha Alkaholiks were dropping their first album. To see Supernatural is to enjoy science, discipline, execution and art.
So these two giants are touching down in cities near you and thanks to the crew at DMA and Damanat promotions present Shallah Raekwon, Supernatural and some artists on the ‘TBD’ list for a real ‘Wu-Banga’ of a show on Saturday October 8 at Nectar Lounge in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood. Classic Hip Hop in the building.
