Kwanzaa, the Afro-centric-focused cultural celebration founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 is highlighted with information, practices and performances with a cast of educators, cultural specialists, authors and poets (Poet Laureate of Tacoma, Antonio Pito Edwards is featured) in a one-hour special that touches on the purpose and practicality of acknowledging and celebrating Kwanzaa. The special was created by Director/Producer/Filmmaker/Professor Jose S. Gutierrez Jr. (also Editor-In-Chief of Seaspot)
Produced at Thurston Community TV & Media Studios in West Olympia, Washington – Living & Celebrating Kwanzaa takes viewers on an introductory journey into the various ways that people can bring honor and dignity to the family through the Nguzo Saba (7 Principles/Days) of Kwanzaa and include food and conversation as necessary family and community-building practices. Hosted by 40-year-veteran counselor, Arkame B. Curry – the special includes interviews and performances with Fatima D. Mateen, Dawud Mateen and Professor Carl Livingston of Seattle Central College.
