HAPPY KWAANZA! HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY!
IN THIS ISSUE:
B2K IS BROKEN UP IN 4K
"Already?" fellas ask. "Noooooo!", ladies scream. Yes, the worst fears of boy band neophytes have become a reality. B2K has entered the 2004 with a bang - a break up.
In a press release issued by The Ultimate Group, the management company which guided the careers of the foursome of young singer/rappers from Los Angeles, it was confirmed that the quartet has broken up and has been leaning toward this decision based on career differences for some time now.
Rumors abound that lead-singer, Omarion is the root cause of the disbanding of the outrageously popular boy-band, but these rumors can only be confirmed from within private circles. Chris Stokes, manager and owner of TUG reports that he is sad to see the split and hopes that the group can reconcile - especially as they are under contract with him. Not legal matters too?! This is called the showbiz, no showfriends!
No one at The Ultimate Group was available for a direct statement at publishing.
MR. JACKSON DENIES NATION OF ISLAM CONNECTION
In a statement issued by his publicist and lawyer, Michael Jackson has denied allegations that he not only sexually abused a child, but that he has a forwarded his business dealings to be handled by staff from the Chicago-based, Nation of Islam.
Critics of the Nation of Islam suggest that an association by Jackson with the pro-Black group led by The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan could be disastrous for his career, as the NOI has been targeted as a 'racist' organization against Whites and Jews. However there is no record of organizationally permitted violence committed by the Nation of Islam personnel against any groups. Jackson's team stands by it statement of no-business contact with the NOI.

UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL WINS KUBE 93'S ARTIST OF '03
Under the title of "What's Hot": The duo, Unexpected Arrival, representing Seattle Hip-Hop with rhymes and song topped the NW noteworthy candidates for Artist of The Year on KUBE 93 FM, Seattle's Hit Music Station. Big ups UA and keep it moving - keep making your dreams realities.
Other notable candidates for the award were: Darrius Willrich, the talented singer/songwriter based out of Seattle who dazzled listeners with his self-titled release in '03. Dub B was also in the running, with a strong release and even stronger bankroll that allowed him the business infrastructure usually absent when it comes to independent artist campaigns.
OCEAN RECORD READIES RELEASE OF NOTEWORTHY COMPILATION
Ocean Records, best recognized for its release of the Criminal Nation, Resurrection album in 1998 is back on the market with an impressive lineup of artists on Indie Sessions Vol. 1. "I guarantee that cats are going to enjoy this album - Ocean is going straight to the market with a strong campaign. We're not really focusing on radio, we're focusing on the streets," said Steve Brown, CEO of Ocean Records based in Lakewood, WA.
The Lineup includes Hip-Hop superstars, Al Tariq and DJ Mr. Supreme amongst many others. DJ Supreme also plays host for the snippet mixtape that will be distributed during the Indie Sessions Vol. 1 promotional campaign.
DJ SUPREME IS DOING HIS THING
It is not easy claiming to be a DJ when lined up next to this cat DJ Supreme out of Seattle, WA. I chopped the game up with the Seaspot Magazine coverman, his management company and publicist recently - here is what's on tap for a real DJ/B-Boy who hustles like he talks.
Supreme keeps it busy as a crowd rocker and frequent flyer. Catch the Ermerald City legend DJaying The Game party in Las Vegas - oh, you don't know about The Game? These are the cats who release the Hip-Hop Honeys DVD series and this party is a feature at the Adult Video Awards right on the strip. Oh yeah, this playa makes me sick - he just inked a sponsorship deal with Roc-A-Wear clothing. 'Preme doesn't stop there as he keeps his finger on the pulse of NW Hip-Hop as the host/DJ of the soon to be released Ocean Records Indie Sessions Vol. 1 Compilation mixtape/snippet. Supreme is a busy man and a clever one at that - he is releasing his live mixed "A Funk 45 Extravaganza" recorded on-air December 14, 2003 and hosted by Johhny Horn at KEXP in Seattle. Whutcha want? I don't mean to cheerlead for this Boriqua and on the real - I don't have to. Supreme is laying the blueprint for aspiring businessfolk in the indy Hip-Hop community to learn from and apply - especially DJs. Don't cry, take it ya eye - as LL would laugh.
Oh, that's not all either. To keep his name on your block and everyone else's in the NW, Supreme is releasing his new mixtape, American Pimp. You can only imagine the content and character of this street sweeper. Another tape, Take A Good Look, will hit the blocks hosted by Young Have Not and featuring exclusives mic blows from top tier MCs only. Tacoma and Seattle, boy you know you in trouble. Oh, you thought 'Preme was done? Wrong again. His new Officials CD is on the street as I type and available at Officials clothing store in Ballard (206) and online at www.dejaneiro.com. He's also riding high on his homie, Hi-Jack's new blend CD that 'ridiculous' and 'will never get old.'
As far as media goes, Supreme is featured most recently in Seaspot Magazine, Complex Magazine (50 Cent cover) and Ghetto Blaster magazine. He has just completed four Television commercials and is working on a DVD to be released in 2004. Oh, and officially Superma...I mean Supreme is working a record deal with Buttermilk (Seattle) and has a funk 45 compilation on deck for '04 as well. This is all when the cat is not guest DJaying in my old stomping grounds at The Beat 94.5 in Canada, spinning at the Bada Lounge (206) on Wednesday nights or being signed to flip skills at the official G-Unit parties in Vancouver, BC. Don't sleep.
Cats can really get some inspiration from Supreme's perspiration. Movin' and shakin' like a pimp shakes.
GENE DEXTER SAYS - READY, SET, INDUSTRY!
Gene Dexter, Nasty Nes and their Crazy Pinoy empire have been runnin' thangs in the Seattle Hip-Hop community for more than a decade; building partnerships, creating business, promoting for clients and networking. Now the networks will be official if Dexter can help it.
Beginning in January '04, Dexter and his Crazy Pinoy/Ifirm group are soliciting the cooperation of Seattle-area Hip-Hop heavyweights to come together for a series of photo sessions, media exposes and feature meetings for what seems to be consolidation of a who's who power list of 206 heavy hitters. So far some of the guests invited to partake in the highroller convention are: DJ Funkdaddy, Steve O., Dove, Livio, DJ B-Mello, Unexpected Arrival, Mr. D-Sane and many more. Check him out.

PIERCE COUNTY SAYS NO BUTTS ABOUT IT
Lawmakers in Pierce County have signed policy stating that beginning in 2004 it is illegal to smoke in nightclubs/taverns. The nightclub owners are not having it, saying that it will effect the business and social environment of various establishments. The law has already been challenged in the courthouse. What The Dilly Yo? will keep you posted.

USC AND LSU SHARE THE NATIONAL TITLE
The University of Southern California Trojans are disappointed and the Louisiana State University Tigers are elated. They couldn't be on two further ends of the emotional spectrum, but what is true in 2004 is that both of these college football programs have won their first national championships in decades.
USC last won a title in the '70s and you have to back nearly half a century to 1958 to track down a national title won by the Bayou Bengals of LSU. USC masterfully laid to rest a weary looking Michigan Wolverine unit that was outmatched on paper and grass and LSU handily deconstructed the Oklahoma Sooner machine that was all of the brouhaha just before they got shut down in the Big 12 Title game by the Kansas State Wildcats with Ell Roberson and Darin Sproles. What is ironic is that even after being demolished by K-State, the then No. 1 ranked Sooners retained their standing and USC was leapfrogged by the Tigers.
The Trojans didn't whine, they didn't cry about the seemingly unjustified miff at the hands (or buttons and circuits) of the computer dominated Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The Trojans, led by star college coach Pete Carroll traveled a couple miles up to the Rose Bowl and smashed on the Maze and Blue. In the '04 Sugar Bowl, LSU upset the No. 1 Sooners and practically gave the Sooners their only two touchdowns, holding them to a season-low, 159 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-14 beatdown.
COUGS AVENGE '03 BIG 12 LOSS IN TEXAS WIN
I received a lot of slack from some cats in Spokane after the Cougs were crushed by Oklahoma 34-14 at the Rose Bowl. I said that the Coug got smashed on - only because they did - and I actually wore the Crimson and Gray. Somebody's got to be the voice of objectivity. Anyway, the truth this year is that the Cougs got by an electrifying University of Texas football crew led by freshman quarterback Vincent Young, 28-20 in the '03 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. 'Bout time Cougs - after blowing the Apple Cup in the final seconds to perennial Seattle underachievers suiting up in Purple and Gold this year - y'all had to do something right? The Cougars finished the year ranked at No. 9 in the USA, but as usual they will most likely have to claw their way back to such notoriety. The Cougars have not entered the season in the top 20 in the past 5 years (One Rosebowl, one Holiday bowl and one Sunbowl.

ROCK THOSE WEIGHTS AND LOSE SOME TOO
New Years, New Years, New Years...2004. Time to change the game. A recent study said that cats who watch TV for more than two hours per day tend to have an inordinate amount of poundage on their bodies. Sittin' on the couch, eatin' pizza quesadillas and making excuses for not hittin' the pavement or the gym are weak excuses for maintaining poor physical health - I know from experience (it's personal though).
Get in the gym and start with some light exercises to accompany a lighter eating habit. A lot of fast food equals a lot of quick weight. And with all of the health concerns associated with poultry these days, you have to be certain where your meat and poultry come from – man, you might be eating that powder that cats pour into a bucket, mix with water and call meat. Scrap that plan! Vegetables, fruit and light meals are the keys to a renewed you and an energized you in 2004! All of you entrepreneurs need to have energy, staying up 18 hours a day and all. Change the game, change your eating habits, change your health and make it a life resolution beginning this new year.
I'm not saying that this is easy, much discipline is in need to begin and maintain this lifestyle change, but the rewards are immeasurable – and no you don't need TrimSpa like Ms. Anna Nicole Smith either (she looks better though than on her VH1 special) - work it out! Peace.
SHOTS...
- DJ KEMO: Up in Vancouver, BC. Kemo has been doing it big for the gold-selling Rascalz for years and now he is set to officially launch his Kemomatic Mix CD, which is expected to blow up spots all over North America. Do the damn thang mayn.
- DJ POLO: This legend and spinner who used by Kool G. Rap's constant companion is making crazy power moves. Did you know he has a management deal and partnership with Ron Jeremy? Did you know that they are releasing an album together? Did you know that he is the official music director @ The Bunny Ranch in Nevada (yeah, the one on HBO)? He recently signed a booking deal with Devastator Management and Communications based in the Pacific Northwest and he is releasing six volumes of The Bunny Ranch compilations to feature varying genres from Rock to Hip-Hop and beyond. What up Polo!
- STELLA HAIOULANI: Stella and her Free Ya Mind Consulting Group (The AHB Network and CIMI Consulting) organized and hosted the bomb Kwaanza celebration at the Colored Women's Center in Tacoma on the day of Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility). It was off the chain and money was raised for the Big Homie Program which tutors and mentors young men/boys in Tacoma who need shoes to wear to school and in athletic endeavors. Hip-Hop for Humanity in a real way!
- LAWRENCE STONE: One of Tacoma's founding members of the Eastside Bloods gang, has changed his ways. Stone is the founder of the Big Homie Program and spends his time with young brothers on the streets of T-Town, who really need positive role models and an alternative influence from the streets. Stone advocates for Christian ministries and involvement in the lives of our best, brightest and most vulnerable population. Stone admits that he is not and has not been perfect, but uses his life as an example of what can be. Thanks Stone for doing the work that many people talk about doing.
